Mods

Mods (or Modifications) are probably the most complex topic encountered by those aircraft builders who wish to own a Europa that is customised in anything other than a purely cosmetic manner (i.e. not just the upholstery or paint scheme). The rules for making modifications to the design of the Europa vary by country, and you must check with your national authority for your particular rules. For example, in the UK, all mods must be approved by the PFA, while in the US, the FAA allow builders of experimental aircraft much more freedom.

It is important to understand that mods can vary from the very simple, like removable sub-panels on the instrument panel, to the very complex, like conversions to a conventional taildragger configuration. Some are available from the Europa factory, some are published by the Europa Club, and some are the work of individuals. In this section we have aimed to list all the Club mods, the Factory mods applicable to most builders, and those individual mods that the owners are prepared to provide information for.

Simply because someone has already produced the modification you desire does not mean that you may simply copy it on your aircraft. Different rules apply in different countries and it may be necessary to seek the approval of your regulatory body.

Before you venture into the world of mods, we strongly recommend you read Ian Rickard's background article. It is aimed primarily at the UK's regulatory environment, but much of it is applicable worldwide and it contains much common sense. It also details the criteria used on this Web Site when grading modifications.
